West End or West Bay? Why West Bay is better than West End.

So you’ve decided to go to Roatan!  Your first real decision is where on the island to stay, a choice that will likely be between West Bay and West End.

The decision should be West Bay, and here is why:

West Bay actually has a beach.  West Bay’s beach stretches about a mile, and is full of soft white sand to frolic in.  If you enjoy laying out or walking on the beach, you won’t have that same comfort at West End.  Frolic away on West Bay.

Now that's a beach!

Now that’s a beach!

West Bay’s reef starts about 20 yards off the beach, compared to around 200 yards off West End.  Not to mention West Bay has a dedicated area to snorkel sans boat traffic and superior coral and sea life.  If you enjoy swimming with the fishies, head to West Bay.  If you prefer to dodge boats, West End may be better.

Bars, Bars, Bars

Hey Vacaybuddy! But West End has all the bars! West Bay serves alcohol too my friend. If you are coming to Roatan to party, you’ve come to the wrong place.  Roatan is known for great beaches, weather, world class diving/snorkeling – NOT nightlife.  If you are looking to party, head to Cancun.

This is not Roatan, and hopefully never will be...

The hotels and resorts are much better quality.  In fact, the buildings overall in West Bay are much cleaner, newer, and nicer.

Although West End may have more restaurants overall, the quality is better in West Bay. Vintage Pearl, Nice N Spicy, Beachers, Celeste, Bite on The Beach, and Luna Maya are all fantastic.  Yeah for food!

Everyone loves to Instragram pretty pictures of sunsets. So if you want to impress your friends – West Bay is the spot.

Instagram worthy.

Easy Choice

If you are toiling between the two locations, West Bay is your answer.

Very helpful! What are your thoughts on Sandy Bay? We’ll be in Roatan for 14 days, sand fleas are not my friend, as you can tell in my other comment and so far we plan on having 4 adults, 3 kids. Our family coming with us live in Catacamas, Honduras. Any other tips would be great.

I like Sandy Bay a lot. Anthony’s Key is great – and the dolphin swimming/snorkeling is probably the most amazing activity on the island. It’s definitely more secluded than West Bay/West End – which could be a good thing or bad thing depending on what you are after.

Thanks for the feedback. Hubby and I are going to do the dolphin snorkeling activity, Can’t wait. We are definitely looking to do more in house cooking than going out all the time. I would love a rental home with pool and beach access. We have looked at a ton of homes and resorts. What are your thoughts on the Foster’s Roatan resort?

I’ve heard good things about Foster’s – but don’t have any experiences first hand. It’s on the quiet side of West Bay (North side), but it’s only a 5-10 minute walk to the far side of the beach in front of Infinity Bay. It’s really close to Beacher’s and Bite On The Beach, two of my favorite restaurants.

I’d totally pick West End…and then take the boat over for beach. Better food in West End. West Bay, I think, you could be anywhere in the Caribbean. Not a TON of charm. But just my opinion! Cool blog…

Definitely some great places to eat in West End. The town atmosphere is nice too. I think I am just too much of a beach snob :(

    Hi Phil,

We are going to be in Roatan Honduras for 1 day on a cruise ship at the end of December. I would like going to West Bay area on a taxi. Is it safe? Is there access to beach without going through the resorts?

West Bay is one of the nicest areas of Roatan. Buses and taxis frequently visit the area, as it’s one of most popular destinations for tourists.

You can access the beach walking through Bananarama or Infinity Bay. Although you technically walk through the resorts, it is a common and accepted occurrence even for those that are not staying at the resort.

      Have fun on your trip!
